Band Baaja Baaraat (English: Bands Horns and Revelry), also known by the abbreviated form BBB is a 2010 Indian feature film that marks the directing debut of Maneesh Sharma and stars Anushka Sharma and newcomer Ranveer Singh in the lead roles. Produced and distributed by Yash Raj Films, the film is a romantic comedy set in the world of wedding planning. It was released worldwide on December 10, 2010. It is rated 6.5/10 on the Hindi film review aggregator website ReviewGang, indicating generally favorable reviews. The film was a critical and commercial success despite initial competition from No Problem and Tees Maar Khan.
Band Baaja Baaraat was initially proposed to make another movie, but lead actress, Anushka Sharma turned down the role, due to ongoing conflicts with her co-star(s). Ranveer Singh has commented saying, "[He] doesn't think working in a continuous tense atmosphere is good. [He] may have to consider whether or not [he'll] be happy spending time with [his] co-stars on set if [he] were to film another movie."

 Plot

Bittoo Sharma (Ranveer Singh) is street-smart and fun-loving. The movie opens with Bittoo collecting money from others to gatecrash a wedding for tasty food. Intelligent and quirky, Shruti Kakkar (Anushka Sharma), who assists the wedding coordinator, suspects that he is from neither the groom nor bride's side. However, Bittoo is successful in convincing her that he has a right to be there. After watching her dance at the wedding, Bittoo makes a video of her during the dance routine. After finding out her name and college, he tries to give her the DVD to impress her. She accepts it and tells him her dream of opening a wedding-planning company. When Bittoo's father comes to take him back to his village, Bittoo refuses and lies that he and Shruti are going into business together. He goes to Shruti with this idea and she initially refuses, but after seeing his persistence, finally agrees. They name the company "Shaadi Mubarak", and with the work equally split between the two, their enterprise becomes a success.
Their first project is low-budget but very successful. The flamboyant duo then go on to plan many more small weddings. Later, they migrate to posh colonies of Delhi and get their first big client. After working night and day, their project becomes highly successful. At the night of the event, they dance to celebrate, and Shruti gets drunk. She falls for Bitto, and the two make love that night. The following morning, Bittoo realizes the mistake he has made, as he is not in love with Shruti, but does not want to hurt her feelings. While he acts strangely toward her, Shruti is extremely nice to him, which is unlike her, as she is usually sarcastic and snappy towards him. In an argument, Bittoo throws her own words back at her, that business and pleasure don't mix, and he does not love her. This creates a tense atmosphere between the two, and Bittoo leaves to create his own wedding-planning enterprise. Both of them attempt to prove themselves in the industry and provoke people to go against the other. However, both enterprises end up suffering huge losses.
They finally get a contract in which they are asked to work together as a team. Both of them unwillingly take it up for the sake of recovering their own losses. After they start working for the wedding, Bittoo finds out that Shruti is engaged to a businessman in Dubai. Bittoo pesters Shruti, asking her whether her engagement was an attempt to make him jealous. Shruti answers that she is not doing it for revenge, but for her own security and her parents' satisfaction to see her well-settled in life. She acknowledges that she did fall in love with Bittoo, but since he didn't feel the same, she had moved on. At the sudden thought of losing her forever, Bittoo realizes that he was always been in love with Shruti, but simply didn't know it. Finally, Bittoo and Shruti both acknowledge their love for each other with a passionate kiss. The film ends with both of them dancing at their own wedding, with their friends and family surrounding them.

  • Development

Yash Raj Films announced the then-untitled project on February 4, 2010. Maneesh Sharma, who has been an associate or assistant director on a number of Yash Raj Films productions such as Fanaa, Aaja Nachle and Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, makes his feature directing debut with this film. Sharma also came up with the film's story, however the actual screenplay was written by Habib Faisal, a writer who has worked on a number of other romantic comedies for the company, such as Salaam Namaste, Ta Ra Rum Pum and Jhoom Barabar Jhoom. Sharma described the story as "a quintessential Delhi tale, inspired by events in his own life". A relatively low-budget film costing 100 Million Rupees (a little more than US$2 million at the time), Band Baaja Baaraat is produced by Aditya Chopra and executive producers Aashish Singh and Sanjay Shivalkarr.
Prior to its release, Band Baaja Baaraat was accused of being a rip-off of the 2001 American film The Wedding Planner, which was denied by a Yash Raj Films representative But storyline of Band Baaja Baaraat is totally different.

Anushka Sharma at a Band Baaja Baaraat press event, 2010
Prior to the film's release, Anushka Sharma referred to it as her "best film till date". Band Baaja Baaraat's trailer and official website were both unveiled on October 19, 2010, a couple of months before the theatrical release. In addition to the film's synopsis and trailer, the website initially also contained five wallpapers and a press kit for visitors to download. The number of available wallpapers later grew to twenty-five and the website eventually allowed visitors to send e-cards to their acquaintances, with the virtual cards dubbed "Band Baaj-O-Grams". A number of contests were organized by Yash Raj Films, including one where the company, along with partners Radio Mirchi and BIG Cinemas, offered the winning couple a free wedding in December, in time for the film's release and supposedly planned the film's heroes, and another in which a couple would win a trip to Switzerland and visit the filming locations of the various Yash Raj Films productions to have been shot there. In addition to the website, Yash Raj Films also had regularly updated official pages on Facebook and Twitter and a Blogspot blog in an effort to reach the widest audience possible. The company finally uploaded a number of videos on their YouTube account, including the trailer but also several videos promoting the songs Tarkeebein and Ainvayi Ainvayi.

Lead actor Ranveer Singh at a promotional event for Band Baaja Baaraat
On October 21, lead actors Anushka Sharma and Ranveer Singh went to the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi with director Maneesh Sharma to take part in their annual festival and promote the film. The next day, the trio appeared at the GIP Mall in Noida. On October 26, a fight broke out between Ranveer Singh and a man alternatively described as a 29-year-old called Uday Khanolkar or a 30-year-old called Uday Sahay. The incident occurred on Kingfisher Airlines flight IT 331 from Mumbai to Delhi, where both Singh and Anushka Sharma were travelling in business class to promote the movie. The two actors noticed a passenger taking pictures of them with his cellphone, and demanded that he hand over his phone so that they could delete the pictures. The man refused and claimed to be an IAS officer. The ensuing argument grew so heated that the cabin crew had to intervene and both parties went to the police station upon arrival and stayed there for over an hour-and-a-half, eventually sorting the matter out amicably without lodging any complaints.
Prior to Band Baaja Baaraat's release, some pundits have expressed doubts that the film would be successful, citing the middling response to Yash Raj Films' last few productions, the lack of a male star and the fact that the female lead, Anushka Sharma, was by then an "almost-forgotten" actress. Some have even speculated that the 22-year-old's career might not thrive for much longer with her three film contract with Yash Raj Films being over.

    Theatrical run

On September 24, 2010, Yash Raj Films announced that the film would release worldwide on December 10 of that year almost two years to the day after the release of Anushka Sharma's debut Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi. Some people have speculated that this was not coincidence but an attempt to rekindle with the success of her first film.
